Check NJ tax refund statusDelays, reduced refunds, lost checks and notices

You can check a New Jersey refund online or by phone with two details from your return. A refund that is still processing past the Division’s window, reduced, offset, or held behind a notice needs someone to find the cause. Wasserman Accounting CPAs reads the notice, fixes the return, and responds to the Division for New Jersey filers.

NJ refund status and delays in three points

01

Check your NJ tax refund online with the Division’s Where Is My Refund tool or by phone at 1-800-323-4400, using the Social Security number listed first on the return and the refund amount requested.

02

Allow at least 4 weeks after e-filing or 12 weeks after mailing before the status appears; a reduced refund means the Division adjusted the return or applied it to a debt, and it writes to you either way.

03

Wasserman Accounting CPAs finds out why a refund is delayed or reduced, responds to the notice, and amends the return when it needs correcting.

A CPA or EA finds out why your New Jersey refund is delayed or short and tells you what to send. Call 609-281-8096 or send the contact form.

How do I check my NJ tax refund status?

You can check tax refund status in NJ two ways, with two details from the return: the Social Security number listed first and the refund amount requested.

Online

Use the Division’s Where Is My Refund tool to check your NJ state tax refund.

By phone

Call the automated refund line at 1-800-323-4400 or 609-826-4400 from anywhere, 24 hours a day.

The tool covers the New Jersey refund only; the IRS processes the federal refund separately. A direct deposit posts as “State of N.J. NJSTTAXRFD”, and a paper check is drawn on the Property Tax Relief Fund.

It shows whether the return is still being processed, whether the refund has been approved, and when a direct deposit or check is scheduled — the same information the Division’s phone agents see. If the status has not moved past processing after the posted window, we find out why. If the approved amount is lower than you requested and you have a letter naming an agency, see our NJ refund offsets page.

Why does the NJ refund tool show no result?

Before treating a “not found” result as a problem, check three things:

  1. 1Enter the refund amount requested on the filed NJ-1040, which can differ from the figure your tax software showed
  2. 2Re-check the Social Security number listed first on the return
  3. 3Confirm the Division’s minimum processing time has passed

Use only the Division’s tool and phone numbers to check status, and ignore texts or emails that ask you to verify bank details or click a link. The Division publishes what it will and will not send on its fraud prevention page.

How long does a NJ tax refund take?

The Division posts minimum processing times for returns filed after January 26, 2026, and your status appears after them.

Minimum wait before a New Jersey refund status appears, by how the return was filed
How you filedWait before checking
E-filed return4 weeks or more
Mailed paper returnAt least 12 weeks
Paper return sent by certified mail, or a return needing additional review15 weeks or more

A refund that includes the New Jersey Earned Income Tax Credit can take longer than these windows, and the Division pays no interest on it. On any other refund issued more than six months after the later of the due date and the filing date, the Division owes you interest, unless the delay was your error.

Why is my NJ refund delayed or reduced?

The Division holds or reduces a refund for these reasons:

  • A typo in a Social Security number or bank account details
  • Missing documents tied to withholding or a credit you claimed
  • An identity or fraud screening review
  • A New York credit adjustment: the Division compares the credit for taxes paid to New York on your NJ-1040 with New York’s records and may reduce it before it writes to you (notice code NYP), or ask for your New York return first (notice code CJW)
  • An offset against a debt you owe a New Jersey, municipal or federal agency, or one of four states with a reciprocal agreement (see our NJ refund offsets page)
  • A refund check returned as undeliverable because of an address problem

Why was my New York credit adjusted?

NYP

The Division reduced the credit

It compared the credit claimed on your NJ-1040 with New York’s records and cut it before writing to you.

CJW

The Division wants your New York return

It is asking for the return before it decides the credit, so the refund waits on your response.

The New York credit is based on the tax shown on your New York return, not the New York tax withheld on your W-2, and it is the lesser of that tax and the Schedule NJ-COJ figure. A full New York refund means no New Jersey credit. If your refund was reduced, we pull the return and the notice and tell you which of these applied.

What if my NJ tax refund check was not delivered?

A check that has not been delivered 30 days after approval can be traced and replaced.

Returned to the Division

Use the Division’s Undeliverable Refund Search to see whether the Postal Service returned the check. It covers paper checks for the current and prior tax year, and you can request a resend from it.

Lost, stolen or destroyed

Call the Customer Service Center at 609-292-6400 and the Division traces it. A replacement takes up to 30 days.

Expired

Mail it with a letter requesting a replacement to NJ Division of Taxation, Taxpayer Accounting Branch, PO Box 266, Trenton, NJ 08695-0266. Do not write “void” on it, and keep a copy.

How do you respond to a NJ refund notice?

The notice lists the documents the reviewer needs and carries a code, such as CJW, EWN or NYP, for the part of the return under review.

  1. 01

Read the code on the notice. It names the part of the return the reviewer is questioning, which is what decides the documents you send.

  2. 02

Gather what it asks for, listed below, before you reply. A partial response restarts the clock.

  3. 03

Respond one of three ways: upload through the New Jersey Online Notice Response Service, mail, or in person at a Regional Information Center, where staff can adjust your return on the spot. The Division does not accept documents by fax or email.

  4. 04

Check status again 90 days after you respond. The Division processes responses in the order received.

Gather before you respond

  • A copy of the notice
  • The wage and withholding forms it references, such as your W-2s or 1099s
  • Any specific proof it asks for, such as identity or address verification

If the notice is unclear or the adjustment looks wrong, we review it and respond for you. The Division answers the common cases in its frequently asked questions.

Holding a notice, or a refund that came up short?

We read the code, gather the documents, and respond through the Division’s online service for you. Call 609-281-8096.
